Not sure what a far-infrared sauna can do for you? Take a few minutes to learn the many benefits of far-infrared sauna sessions — from weight loss to relaxation and a host of other advantages to enhance your overall well-being.
How a far-infrared sauna works
If you shy away at the thought of the overwhelming heat a traditional hot sauna offers, know that an infrared sauna is different. This type of sauna uses light to create heat rather than heat to warm the air, which warms your body. The far-infrared sauna — “far” describes where the light waves fall on the light spectrum — heats your body directly without making the air around you unbearably hot.
An infrared sauna operates at a lower temperature than traditional dry or steam saunas. The temperature inside a far-infrared sauna is typically 120˚F-140˚F, rather than the 150˚F-180˚F of a traditional hot sauna. This lower temperature range allows you to stay in the infrared sauna longer so your reap the health benefits of the infrared light as it safely heats your internal tissue.
The benefits of infrared light
Spending time in a far-infrared sauna offers reactions in your body that are similar to what happens when you exercise, increase your heart rate, and sweat it out. After a session, you may experience:
- Relief from sore muscles
- Clear, glowing skin
- Improved circulation
- Lower stress levels
- Improved relaxation and sleep
- Joint pain relief
- Increased flexibility
- Improved range of motion
- Detoxification of impurities
- Reduced cold and flu symptoms
- Weight loss
Because 20-30 minutes in a far-infrared sauna increases the core temperature of your body and your heart rate, this can lead to an increased metabolism. Similar to how your body responds to exercise, your body works harder to lower your core temperature and therefore burns more calories. Over time, this increased metabolism helps you lose weight and break up watery fat and cellulite deposits each time your core temperature reaches 100.5˚F.
Studies indicate that people with chronic health issues, including high blood pressure, headaches, rheumatoid arthritis, and Type 2 diabetes, can also benefit from infrared sauna sessions. Furthermore, no adverse effects have been reported with infrared saunas, so rest assured that you can safely incorporate infrared sauna visits into your health and wellness routine.
Make the most out of your infrared sauna session
As with any sauna or experience that increases your body temperature and makes you sweat, you should drink plenty of water before you go into the infrared sauna. Choose a temperature that feels comfortable to you, and increase the temperature as you adapt at following sessions. We can help you get started if it’s your first time in a far-infrared sauna.
You might only stay in the sauna 15 minutes for your first visit, but you can increase your time until you’re up to 20-30 minutes for each session. While you’re in the sauna, take a break from your busy schedule and simply relax and enjoy the health benefits. Allow your body time to cool down before you rush back into your daily routine, and continue to drink plenty of water for the rest of the day after your appointment.
Depending on your health goals, we can recommend an ideal number of infrared sauna sessions each week so you can enjoy the maximum benefits.
